EDITORIAL

Portico Jackson magazine welcomes editorial features and department queries. We believe the best ideas come from deep within the community in which we serve.

In writing for Portico, please consider the following: writing style should be concise and descriptive with sidebars and various other points of entry. We prefer revealing facts to flowery adjectives and operate under the assumption that less is more.

We are not scared to laugh.

Features
Features are typically 4-8 pages long including photography. Word counts on features range from 900-1600 words. Included in this should be at least two side bars or points of entry.

Departments
Departments are naturally shorter, ranging from 400-700 words. The purpose here is a quick entry and exit for the reader and a way to deliver a wider range of information. Queries on new department ideas are always welcome. Listed below are our most consistent departments:

• Edibles & Elixirs
• The Good Life
• Travel
• Perspectives
• Ten Things I’ve Learned
• Arts & Culture
• The Giving Tree
• Interiors / Exteriors
• Fiction

We gladly consider fiction pieces. Typical length is between 1,200 and 2,500 words.

Deadlines
Our staff works 90 to 100 days out. For example, an article running in February would be due in November.

Return policy
Please do not include original photography with unsolicited article submissions as we can not be responsible for its return. Any photography and/or disks will be returned for articles that are chosen for publication. Unfortunately we are unable to return unsolicited manuscripts or photography.

Payment
Fees are based on article placement and will be negotiated upon consideration of publication. All fees are paid based on 30 days net upon publication of an issue.
